D-Link DIR-300 Setup

The DIR-300 router has been discontinued today, and its more modern version, DIR-300NRU, can be seen on sale. The difference between them is small: slightly different interfaces (NRU cannot be restarted through the interface), different versions of Wi-Fi (G and stripped-down N), different firmware and Russification files. Otherwise, the information is relevant for the new version of the router.

In fact, the English word route means a route. Therefore, correctly and in Russian this device is called a router. But since everyone will look for a router anyway, I will use this name. The article will focus on configuring the DIR-300 router from D-Link.

The model of the router is quite widespread due to the good price-quality ratio. Setting up a router is not a particularly difficult process when you have an idea of networks, but if you don’t have such knowledge, setting up a router can be a big problem, especially if the quality of services provided by the provider is not up to par.

Before you connect and configure the router, you need to collect data on the computer, which will be useful in the configuration process. Open the Start menu, go to Network Connections and click (double click) on the Local Area Connection icon. In the appeared Connection Status … window, select the Support tab and click the Details button. A window appears with the network connection data.

network settings

The following data will be required:

Physical address (MAC address of the network card).
IP address
Subnet mask.
Main gate.
DNS server
Then return to Network Connections and open the properties of the VPN connection (right-click on the VPN icon). In the window that appears, overwrite the data from the Computer name or IP address … field.

VPN server address

The data is collected and now you can proceed to connecting and configuring the DIR-300 router.

Connecting the DIR-300 to a computer
A few words on the appearance of the device. On the front panel there are indicators that help track the operation of the device. Connectors for mains, power and a reset button are located on the rear panel.

indicators and connectors DIR-300

Since D-link routers (not only DIR-300) are not particularly famous for their stable and high-quality work, some difficulties may arise during operation. One of the possible problems with starting the DIR-300 is the inability to enter the user interface using the factory login. The default input is:

Login: admin
Password: not set

However, as practice has shown, this does not always work. There may be other surprises out of the box. Therefore, before setting up the router must be reset. Turn on the power, reset the router. Since the reset button is hidden in the case, you will have to use something long and thin, for example a match. The reset button must be kept pressed until the operating mode indicator flashes. In general, it blinks constantly, but after resetting the router, it blinks more intensively. After rebooting (a minute or so), connect the DIR-300 to the computer, as shown in the figure.

Reset DIR-300 Router

Open a web browser and enter in the address bar:

192.168.0.1

This is the address of the router user interface. It looks like this:

router address

Click Log In and open the LAN Setup interface tab

Settings in the router interface

On this tab, you can change the network address of the router. It needs to be changed so that there are no conflicts. Because the default address 192.168.0.1 may well be used by your provider (Internet service provider) for some of its purposes. Therefore, change this address to 192.168.1.1 and save the settings (the Save settings button at the top of the page).

change of address

A message appears stating that the device address has been changed. Now the user interface will be available at http://192.168.1.1. This will eliminate possible conflicts when working with the network.

change of address

Now connect the network cable (Internet) to the Internet jack (as shown in the photo on the rear panel) and you can proceed to configure the Internet connection. By clicking on the button below, you can watch a video on setting up the router interface.
